Taming the Tupperware Tsunami: A Simple Summer Decluttering Guide for Austin Moms

Summer in Austin is full of snacks, pool days, leftovers, playdates, and kids asking for food every 14 minutes! And somehow, all of that leads to one very real kitchen problemn in every home: the Tupperware cabinet/drawer.

You know the one! You open it looking for one container, and suddenly there is a full “lid-alanche” happening at your feet. Containers without lids, lids without containers, stained takeout boxes, mystery sauce cups, and that one giant container you swear you might need someday.

This is a gentle nudge and a reminder that you don't need a perfect kitchen or extra storage space to feel more organized. You just need a simple system that works for your family in real life.

Why Tupperware Gets Out of Control So Fast

First let's talk about why this happens. Food storage containers are used constantly. Between packing snacks, saving leftovers, meal prepping, and feeding kids who seem to be hungry all day, this cabinet works hard.

The problem usually is not the containers. It is the lack of a system.

When there is no clear (and labeled) home for each item, everyone just shoves things wherever they fit. That is how one small cabinet becomes a full Tupperware tsunami.

Let's Declutter

Organizing a kitchen can be overwhelming. I always recommend to start small. You do not have to empty the whole kitchen. Pick one drawer, one shelf - in this case the one which contains Tupperware. Then sort your containers into three piles:

Keep: Containers with matching lids that you actually use.

Recycle or toss: Warped, cracked, stained, sticky, or lidless containers. You can recycle transparent or white plastic containers but not the black ones.

Donate: Extra containers in good condition that no longer serve you or serve the pupose you bought them for.

Get the Kids Involved

Austin busy mom tip: Set a timer for 15 minutes and make it a family challenge. Gamify the challenge. Kids love a “match the lid” game, and it helps them feel included instead of making this another task only Mom has to manage and others get shouted at.

This is a great summer organizing project for kids because it is simple, visual, and low-pressure.

Ask them to:

  • Match lids to containers

  • Sort containers with lids by type or family

  • Stack similar containers by size

  • Separate the ones with missing lids

  • Help them find a snack container zone that they can easily reach and let them choose smaller containers that they will manage and use

  • Let them help label shelves or drawers (can also be a drawing!)

Younger kids can match shapes and colors. Older kids can help decide which containers are easiest for school lunches, snacks, or leftovers.

When kids help build the system, they are more likely to use it. That means fewer containers shoved sideways into the cabinet after dishwasher duty.

Store Containers with Lids On

This maybe something you have never heard of. But hear me out....

For many busy families, like mine, storing containers with lids on is the easiest system to maintain.

Yes, nesting containers may save some space, but it often wastes time. When lids are already attached:

  • You know every container has a match

  • Leftovers are faster to pack

  • The cabinet stays calmer longer

If you have a small kitchen, you can still nest a few larger containers, but keep everyday containers matched with their lids for quick access.

Create Zones That Make Sense

A simple organizing system works better than a fancy one.

Try creating zones like:

  • Lunch containers

  • Leftover containers

  • Snack cups/Kid-Friendly containers

  • Large Seasonal containers

  • Glass containers

Keep Only What Fits Your Real Life

You do not need 47 containers “just in case.” Keep what supports how your family actually eats.

If you meal prep, keep a consistent set of stackable containers. If your kids pack snacks daily, keep small containers easy to reach. Think of how many times you host big parties. If you rarely use giant party containers, move them to a higher shelf or let them go.

The goal is not to own less for the sake of owning less. The goal is to make your kitchen easier to use every single day.

When the System Still Does Not Stick

If you have decluttered your kitchen more than once and it keeps falling back into chaos, it does not mean you failed. It usually means the system does not match your family’s habits.
