What if some of the things taking up space in your home could actually put money back in your pocket?
When I talk about decluttering, people often assume it means throwing things away. But at Declutter Bee, we explore four possibilities: donating, recycling, selling, or rehoming.
Some belongings still have value. Selling gives them a second life while helping you recover some money.
But before deciding where to sell, there's one important question to ask.
Is it worth selling?
Here's something I often remind my clients: not everything that's worth money is worth your time to sell.
Photographing, researching prices, creating listings, answering messages, packaging items, and coordinating pickups all take time and effort.
Before listing something, consider its potential resale value, the time involved, and any platform fees. That $10 item might not be worth several hours of work.
Sometimes donating or rehoming something is the better decision, and that's perfectly okay. The goal is to reclaim your space, not create another overwhelming project.
If you've decided an item is worth selling, here are five avenues worth exploring.
1. Vinted: more than just clothes
You've probably noticed advertisements for Vinted lately. I've recently started exploring this platform myself.
Although best known for secondhand fashion, Vinted also accepts certain home goods, books, collectibles, and other eligible items.
Important pointers:
- Take clear photographs showing labels, condition, and imperfections.
- Include accurate measurements, brands, descriptions, and competitive prices.
- Fees: Vinted generally charges no standard seller fee. Buyers typically pay a Buyer Protection fee, while optional promotional features cost extra. Check the Vinted Help Center for current fees.
2. Facebook Marketplace: great for local sales
Facebook Marketplace is particularly useful for furniture, home décor, appliances, and other household belongings that are easier to sell locally.
Important pointers:
- Include dimensions and photographs from multiple angles.
- Research comparable local listings to price realistically.
- Fees: local, in-person transactions generally have no platform selling fee. Fees may apply to other transaction methods. Always arrange safe pickups and verify payment.
3. eBay: reach a wider audience
eBay is particularly useful for collectibles, electronics, vintage finds, and specialty items that might appeal to buyers beyond your neighborhood.
Important pointers:
- Research completed sales rather than relying on asking prices.
- Use searchable titles with brand names, models, and specifications.
- Fees: many categories have final value fees around 10 to 15%, sometimes with additional per-order charges. Factor in shipping costs. Review eBay's seller fees.
4. Etsy: perfect for vintage treasures
Etsy isn't just for handmade products. It's also a marketplace for qualifying vintage items at least 20 years old and certain craft supplies.
Important pointers:
- Verify eligibility and highlight your item's history and distinctive characteristics.
- Use appealing photographs and descriptive keywords to attract buyers.
- Fees: Etsy typically charges $0.20 per listing, a 6.5% transaction fee, and payment-processing fees. Other charges may apply. Review Etsy's selling fees.
5. Consignment stores: let someone else handle the sale
For designer clothing, furniture, jewelry, or specialty pieces, consignment stores can be an excellent alternative if you don't want to handle the selling process yourself.
Important pointers:
- Choose stores specializing in your item's category.
- Bring clean, well-maintained items to improve acceptance chances.
- Fees: many stores retain approximately 30 to 50% of the selling price, although terms vary. Ask about commissions, markdowns, payout timelines, and unsold items.
Decluttering is about making room for what matters
Selling can be rewarding, but it isn't the only way to give your belongings a new life.
Whether you choose to sell, donate, recycle, or rehome, the important thing is making a decision that works for you. Your time and peace of mind have value, too.
